Are RTX laptops worth the buy?

RTX is a word nowadays thrown around a lot in the PC world. So before we dive deep into the topic, first thing first. What is RTX?

RTX is a graphics rendering development platform created by Nvidia, primarily aimed at enabling real-time ray tracing. Real-time ray tracing is an advanced technology which uses algorithms to replicate the lighting and shadows of the real world into the games. This one standalone feature is making all gaming fanatics going head over heel on the newly launched RTX series GPU’s. If you are still not convinced by the RTX technology just look into games like Cyberpunk 2077, Battlefield V, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and you will understand what the hype is about.

So coming to the actual topic are RTX laptops worth buying. It's have been a long time since there’s been a rivalry going between gamers who uses PC vs gamers who use laptops. Technology is a rapidly growing sector which puts any new gizmo obsolete after 6 months of its launch. Keeping that point in our mind lets consider the latest RTX series GPU’s launched. That one will be the GeForce RTX 2060 Super which was launched on July 9, 2019. And as I said earlier it overthrew its predecessor the GeForce RTX 2060(launched on 15 Jan 2019) within the time gap of 6 months.

The new kid around the block has got some serious firepower underneath it providing a buttery smooth experience while playing esports or AAA level games. So you being a gaming enthusiast will be triggered to buy which model?

Considering the price and all other aspects and you are up to buy the newer model, your RTX laptop won't allow you to do so. Why? because laptops are built on the concept that it’s GPU cannot be upgraded. There’s the first big reason to feel unwise in investing an RTX gaming laptop, UPGRADABILITY.

The next reason to think it’s unwise to invest in an RTX laptop is much more interesting than the previous reason of upgradability. Consider the below table which actually contains some pretty interesting facts.

RTX 2060 Series
Laptop
Desktop
CUDA CORES 1920
Base Clock(MHz)
960
1365
Boost Clock(MHz)
1200
1680
RTX TOPS
26
37
Memory GDDR6 at 14 Gbps
TDP
80-90W
160W

The base clock is the speed at which a GPU can work while running an application and boost clock is the additional speed that GPU can reach at the expense of additional power. So considering these two factors we can see some significant differences in the same product used in RTX laptops and PCs.

In addition to this, the CPU’s used in RTX laptops are deficient of power forcing them to not perform in the max clock speed. A CPU Core of i7-9750H is rated at a 2.6 GHz base and 4.1 GHz all-core boost. However, due to that power limit, the i7-9750H often sits in the mid 3 GHz range when fully utilized. The same does not happen in PCs since they are spared to have an additional power supply. So, after all, spending all the bucks on an RTX laptop and you are going to get underperformance why bother buying in the first place.

Putting aside these factors, RTX laptops provide you with features like

  • Fastest Gaming Laptop in the market
  • Surprisingly quite silent for a gaming laptop
  • Thin and Light high-performance laptop

So again it’s the age-old battle between the pros and cons. After every crucial minute consideration, it all comes down to where you weigh yourself. Do you prefer upgradability and performance over quirky pros like fastest gaming laptops or the other way around, which you can answer yourselves according to your personal preferences. Either way, make choices that makes your gaming experience enjoyable.
